It's official: Robert Gibbs is leaving his post as White House press secretary.

One of President Obama's most seasoned and trusted advisers, Gibbs tells the New York Times' Jeff Zeleny that he will leave the podium in early February to lend outside assistance to the president's re-election campaign. He broke the news to this staff at a meeting earlier Wednesday morning.

No successor has been named, but Gibbs says a successor should be in place within two weeks. Among the names bandied about lately as a replacement: Deputy Press Secretaries Bill Burton and Josh Earnest, as well as Vice President Joe Biden's spokesman, Jay Carney...

The announcement will be at 11:05 in the White House East Room, usually reserved for major bill signing, news conferences of speaking with heads of state.

Emanuel is expected to launch a campaign for mayor of Chicago.

A pro-family organization is calling on President Obama to stand squarely with Israel in the controversy over Israel's conflict with a flotilla of "humanitarian" ships from Turkey.

The Jewish state has come under almost universal world condemnation for using deadly force in dealing with the crew of a Turkish ship trying to run a blockade to Gaza. Nine crew members were killed in the commando raid after they attacked and beat Israelis trying to inspect the ship. One Israeli soldier was thrown off an upper deck and fell 30 feet to the deck below, sustaining significant head injuries.

The White House continues to avoid discussing details on whether Democratic Rep. Joe Sestak was offered a job if he skipped the Pennsylvania Senate primary but spokesman Robert Gibbs said Sunday that lawyers reviewed conversations and found "nothing inappropriate."

"I'm not a lawyer. But lawyers in the White House and others have looked into conversations that were had with Congressman Sestak. And nothing inappropriate happened," Gibbs told CBS' "Face the Nation."
