Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Thirty years ago today, the Supreme Court issued its ruling in Harris v. McRae, resolving a four-year legal battle to ensure that Congress may prohibit taxpayer dollars from funding abortions. Now, pro-life advocates are concerned Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan would scrap the decision.

Harris v. McRae has prevented taxpayer-funded abortion under Medicaid for three decades, and established a legislative standard set by the Hyde Amendment. This narrow 5-4 decision has had a major impact on an issue upon which seven out of ten voters agree - public funds should not be used for abortion.

But with a debate over taxpayer funding of abortions taking center stage in the congressional battle over health care, abortion advocates showed their hand -- they want the Hyde amendment removed...

A college student in New York is once again getting the run-around from school officials for trying to express his religious views on campus.

Last year, Joseph Hayon was initially barred by school officials from distributing pro-life material on the campus of Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn. The matter was resolved only after the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) intervened.

But since Hayon, president of the student Republican Club, wanted to hold an on-campus forum entitled "The Economic, Political, Social, and Legal Outcome on Same-Gender Marriage" to defend the definition of marriage as one man and one woman, another free-speech situation has popped up...

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new poll out of Nevada shows pro-life Republican nominee Sharron Angle may have lost the larger lead she held after getting a bounce following the GOP primary, but she still leads pro-abortion Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid. Rasmussen Reports shows Angle with 48 percent of the Nevada vote and Reid getting just 41 percent.

The latest survey of likely voters in Nevada has 8 percent of the Nevada population preferring some other candidate and two percent saying they are undecided.

Two weeks ago, coming off her primary victory, Angle posted a 50% to 39% lead over Reid, who many consider one of the most vulnerable congressional incumbents in the country...

Fiorina cruised to an easy victory in the race for the Republican nomination defeating pro-abortion former Rep. Tom Campbell and pro-life state Assemblyman Chuck DeVore. She took home 54 percent compared with 26 percent for Campbell and 19 percent for DeVore...

The National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) has adopted a resolution to pursue "common ground" towards reducing abortion in the United States. But one longtime pro-life activist calls the plan "a dead-end road."

Engaging in what it calls "fresh national dialogue" to decrease abortions in America, the NAE resolution includes contraception as one of several possible means of achieving that goal. It also states that "some longtime opponents in the debate over the legality of abortion" have shown an interest participating in the dialogue.

A leaked memo from Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan is raising eyebrows among pro-life groups.

Kagan wrote the memo to then-President Bill Clinton when she served as White House counsel, suggesting that while he should not support H.R. 1122 -- the partial-birth abortion ban bill before Congress at that ime -- she felt he should support the amendment offered by Democratic Senator Tom Daschle. That amendment, she argued, would give abortionists the ability to decide when and to what child the bill applies.

Mary Harned, an attorney with Americans United for Life (AUL), tells OneNewsNow the Justice Department indicated serious questions about whether proposed amendments would pass constitutional muster. But according to Harned, in the memo Kagan "goes on to actually suggest that the president support the Daschle language anyway for political reasons. So even though she had just stated that there's concern that it's unconstitutional, she still urged him to support it"...

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- None of the pro-life Democrats who backed the pro-abortion health care bill in the House have signed on a co-sponsors of new legislation to apply the Hyde amendment to it. The new bill, the Protect Life Act, would fix the several different ways in which the measure funds abortions.

When Congress passed and President Barack Obama signed the new government-run health care bill, some pro-life Democrats supported it saying pro-life groups and lawmakers were wrong and that the measure did not contain taxpayer funding of abortion.

Obama signed an executive order that supposedly curbed the abortion funding, but pro-life groups say it merely restated the provisions of the bill and could easily be overturned in court and has no legal power to trump the abortion funding provisions...

Major pro-life organizations are letting members of the U.S. House of Representatives know they haven't forgotten the vote approving healthcare reform.

The House's action on "ObamaCare" means federal funding for abortion, despite the president's executive order barring use of the money for that purpose. Dan Kennedy, CEO of Human Life of Washington, along with roughly 50 others, signed on to a letter sent to members of the House.

He explains, "The bottom line is we're telling the House of Representatives that we understand and that we think they understand that the executive order really does nothing" because the law as passed by Congress has more authority than a presidential edict....
