(CNSNews.com) – A Republican who called for congressional hearings into cyber security after Rep. Anthony Weiner falsely said his Twitter account had been hacked said he does not understand how the New York Democrat can continue serving in Congress.

“I fully expect an investigation by the Ethics Committee, that will determine if Rep. Weiner used official resources and if he broke any House rules,” Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) told CNSNews.com Tuesday. “He lied about his conduct, and his behavior does not reflect creditably on the House of Representatives, and I do not see how he can long continue to serve in Congress.”

Stearns chairs a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on oversight and investigations, and Weiner also is a member of that subcommittee. Before Weiner admitted to the inappropriate conduct involving at least six women, Stearns was one of the first members of Congress to call for any type of investigation related to the Weiner matter...

Admitting he lied to the public after being caught sending a lewd photo of himself in underwear to a college student, Rep. Anthony D. Weiner on Monday acknowledged making “terrible mistakes,” but said he wouldn’t step down from Congress.

Democratic colleagues said the lawmaker from New York should face an ethics investigation to determine whether his behavior broke House rules. Mr. Weiner said they and his constituents are free to draw their own conclusions, but he thinks he can still serve in office.

“I am deeply regretting what I have done, and I am not resigning,” the married, 46-year-old New Yorker said at a news conference in Manhattan, repeatedly calling his actions “destructive” and “inappropriate,” but that it didn’t rise to the level of abuse of his office...

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House ethics committee's chief counsel recommended Thursday that Rep. Charles Rangel be censured in connection with the panel's finding that he engaged in improper financial and fundraising conduct.

Chief counsel Blake Chisman called for that punishment, despite the veteran New York Democrat's plea for "a drop of fairness and mercy."

If Mr. Chisam's recommendation is carried out, it would be the most serious punishment short of expulsion that could be meted out by the House. Mr. Chisam and Mr. Rangel argued their positions at a public hearing on sanctions, where the 80-year-old congressman acknowledged making mistakes in handling his finances and said he wasn't there to "retry this case"...
