OK, so you wake up from a long drunken bender and discover that you burned through every bit of your money, raided your retirement savings and maxed out all your credit cards with debts your grandchildren will be paying for the rest of their lives. What do you do?

A) Stop spending, pay off your debts and figure out some way to never go on a drunken bender again where you spend all of your money and sentence your grandchildren to the modern day debtor’s prison.

B) Keep spending money you don’t have, apply for new credit cards and don’t do anything that would keep this from happening again for fear that it might make the credit card companies nervous about your financial stability...

The debt limit debate is fundamentally about numbers.

For starters, there's $14.3 trillion. That's the current, statutory debt ceiling which the federal government is threatening to blow past on August 2.

Then there's $2.4 trillion. That's the potential figure by which experts believe Congress would have to increase the debt limit to get the government through the end of 2012. That also seems to be the total cost of spending cuts or revenue offsets that could be negotiated in any final debt limit agreement.

Finally there's $4 trillion. That's the amount of the broad, deficit reduction plan floated by President Obama late last week. House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) yanked that proposal off the table Saturday night after witnessing ferocious opposition from House Democrats...

President Obama's has offered to raise the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67 as part of a larger deficit-reduction package, a move sure to anger congressional Democrats who want to exclude entitlement programs from the ongoing talks.

Democrats already have criticized Republicans over proposed cuts to programs such as Social Security and Medicare, and with Obama showing he is open to program changes, some Democrats are taking a hard line.

"As long as the entitlement programs are part of a cut program, I can't support it," Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., told Fox News, calling such cuts a political and fiscal "mistake"...

Jody Duffy, a former U.S. Army officer, is responding to a new bill Democrats in Congress have filed that would re-institute a Clinton-era policy that allowed abortions at taxpayer-funded U.S. military base hospitals.

Current law in effect since 1996 prohibits the performance of abortion by Department of Defense medical personnel or at DOD medical facilities. A separate provision prohibits the use of DOD funds for abortion except to save the life of the mother. But the MARCH for Military Women Act would lift the current bans and abortion advocates have tried for years to force military base hospitals to do abortions on female service members.

Duffy, a retreat leader for Rachel’s Vineyard, a post-abortion healing program that is part of Priests for Life, writes in a new opinion column in the Los Angeles Times that lawmakers should oppose the legislation...

Democrats and Republicans are clashing in state capitals across the country as GOP-controlled legislatures push proposals to tighten voting requirements -- a move prominent critics have decried as a throwback to Jim Crow laws.

The proposals include measures in nearly three-dozen states to either require voters to show ID before casting their ballots or strengthen existing voter ID laws. Other states have moved to tighten the window for early voting and put new restrictions on whether and when convicted felons can vote.

The proposals are not attracting anywhere near as much attention as state efforts to strengthen immigration laws, cut back on union benefits and balance budgets, but Democrats in recent weeks have launched somewhat of a campaign against them at the national level. They claim Republicans are trying to skew the next election, while limiting the right to vote in the process...

House Republican Leader Eric Cantor opened the door Thursday to discussing tax "loopholes" but reiterated that Republicans do not want any net increase in taxes, before entering what could be a marathon meeting at the White House over deficit reduction.

Cantor was one of six congressional leaders huddling late Thursday morning with President Obama and Vice President Biden as all sides try to break an impasse in long-running budget talks. Republicans want to see significant spending cuts as a condition for raising the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling. Ahead of an Aug. 2 deadline, GOP leaders have balked at Democratic efforts to blend a mix of tax increases into a deficit-reduction deal.

But as Obama suggests Republicans are holding up the deal over resistance to ending tax breaks for corporate jet owners and other select classes, Cantor said that's just "not the case"...

Vice President Joe Biden is on the 2012 re-election ticket, President Obama's aides said Tuesday after a report that the campaign was looking to replace him with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The New York Post reported that Cuomo, who was elected governor in November 2010, is having a great year. Some in the state GOP even say he'd be an asset to the president.

"I don't think there's any doubt Obama is going to pick him as his running mate. The president is in trouble and Biden doesn't bring anything to his ticket," said William Powers, a former New York Republican Party chairman, according to The Post...

A small tax-exempt political group with ties to wealthy liberals like billionaire financier George Soros has quietly helped elect 11 reform-minded progressive Democrats as secretaries of state to oversee the election process in battleground states and keep Republican “political operatives from deciding who can vote and how those votes are counted.”

Known as the Secretary of State Project (SOSP), the organization was formed by liberal activists in 2006 to put Democrats in charge of state election offices, where key decisions often are made in close races on which ballots are counted and which are not.

The group’s website said it wants to stop Republicans from “manipulating” election results...

Taxpayers should be on the hook for abortions done on women and unborn children at military base hospitals, according to new legislation several Senate Democrats filed in order to advance an agenda item they’ve pushed in the past.

Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey joined with fellow Democrats Kirstin Gillibrand of New York, Barbara Boxer of California, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, and Patty Murray of Washington that would pay for the abortions of women in the military.

“Women who bravely choose to serve our country in the military shouldn’t have to forfeit their rights,” Lautenberg said. “When military hospitals fail to provide reproductive health services, women serving in foreign countries are left without access to safe and legal health care. This is unjust treatment for our servicewomen that must be brought to an end”...

Scandal-scarred Rep. Anthony Weiner will resign from his House office on Thursday, sources told Fox News, ending his once-promising political career after his sexually-charged online behavior was exposed.

Weiner, who has scheduled a press conference in New York at 2 p.m. ET, spoke with top leaders including Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Israel and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, sources told Fox News.
