Jews and Christians alike are quite familiar with the biblical story of David and Goliath. Of course, it is much more than just a story. It is the true account of a historic event, a most important and significant event in the life of the Jewish people and nation.
The army of the enemy Philistines was camped nearby the army of the Israelites. The Philistines were prepared and ready to attack and they were confident of victory. They sent out their giant warrior, Goliath, to shout defiant threats to the Israelites.
You will recall that the Israelites trembled with fear, believing that they did not have the power to resist or defeat such an intimidating enemy. The soldiers and the king of Israel alike were overwhelmed with worry and fear. Then along came a lowly young shepherd boy named David who was visiting his soldier brothers. He sees the mighty giant and hears his defying threats. He couldn't believe there was no one in the Israel army who would stand up to the belligerent giant so young David volunteered.
David's unforgettable words to the fearful Israeli soldiers and officers were, "Is there not a cause?" (I Samuel 17:29).
He was reminding his fellow countrymen that the survival of Israel as a free nation and people was an important cause. Were they so afraid of the enemy that they would just sit back and allow their nation to be conquered without a fight?
David boldly approached the well-armed, powerful giant. Carrying only a sling and stones, he shouted to the giant, “I come to you in the name of the Lord!” You know the rest of the story. The Lord directed David’s stone into the giant’s forehead, felling the threatening foe and saving Israel from defeat and destruction.
Is it not appropriate for us today to again ask David’s question: “Is there not a cause?” The Arab and Muslim enemy giants of Israel are shouting their intimidating threats just like Goliath and the Philistines of old. The Palestinian Arabs and the Hamas and Hezbollah terrorists are intent on destroying the Jewish nation and driving the Jewish people into the sea. And the Muslims of Iran keep threatening “to wipe Israel off the face of the map” with nuclear weapons. The religion of Islam commands all Muslims to fight all “infidels,” especially the Jews, to the death.
The United Nations, the European Union, and the United States keep pressuring the Jewish state to surrender half of their land to their destruction-minded Arab neighbors so they can have their own (militant) state. There is no argument that the survival of the modern nation of Israel is seriously threatened.
The survival of the Jewish homeland is at stake. The future of the Jewish people is being threatened. All the blood, sweat and tears of the last years of hard work and development could be lost. So he told his enemy giants he is standing up to them. They must recognize Israel as a Jewish state. They must disarm and dismantle their terrorists and demilitarize. They will not be allowed to bring back their dispelled so-called “refugees” to live in the Jewish state. And they will never be given sovereignty over the eastern part of a divided Jerusalem.
Interestingly, the world seems to have reversed its perception of the roles of David and Goliath as applied to the nations today. The U.N., the EU, and the U.S. now consider tiny Israel to be the intimidating Goliath and the giant Arab world to be the underdog David.
Of course, the God of Israel is the reason behind all this. It is God who has directed the miraculous victories for His Jewish people in the five or six wars with their giant enemies. And it is God who has promised to keep on defending and preserving David’s seed, Israel, from all its surrounding enemy Goliaths.
Remember, David didn’t just ask, “Is there not a cause?” He also shouted to the giant and to everyone else, “The battle is the Lord’s!”
