Report Shows IRS Chief Knew of Tea Party Targeting

A report by the IRS's own watchdog shows senior IRS officials, including the acting commissioner, knew about the agency's targeting of conservative groups, making it clear that efforts went well beyond the branch initially blamed.

Committees from both the House and Senate vowed to investigate.

'Right to Know' Abortion Law Upheld

Women considering an abortion in South Dakota will receive more complete information about how the procedure will affect their bodies and what will actually happen to their unborn child thanks to a ruling by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

South Dakota passed a law in 2005 requiring abortionists to inform women that the procedure ends the life of a living human being, and that they could suffer physical harm from the procedure as well. Jordan Lorence, senior counsel with the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF), says Planned Parenthood immediately sued to block implementation of the law.

Merck, FDA Expand Gardisil Warnings

Merck & Co. and the Food and Drug Administration in June expanded the possible adverse reactions for Gardasil, the widely advertised cervical cancer vaccine for girls and young women, to include joint and muscle pain, fatigue, physical weakness and general malaise.

The new warning - added to the package insert and to an information sheet given to patients - was approved June 12 by the FDA, which states in documents on its Web site that the updated information "reflect reports received" after the vaccine went on the market in 2006.
