Affirming America's religious heritage
Today is the National Day of Prayer. In some quarters in Washington D.C., one can hardly tell. However, in a bipartisan effort, Republican Congressmen J. Randy Forbes from Virginia and Robert Aderholt from Alabama, and Democrat Congressman Mike McIntyre from North Carolina are seeking additional co-sponsors for their "America's Spiritual Heritage Resolution," H. Res. 397. Congressmen Forbes, Aderholt and McIntyre believe that America's religious heritage has been a heightened point of debate and discussion over the past several weeks.
Congressman Forbes quoted President Barack Obama who made a stunning statement while on a recent trip to Turkey. Obama claimed that "we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation, or a Jewish nation...." Congressman Forbes said that "Newsweek" in a cover story stated that this is "The End of Christian America." Also the congressman cited a PEW study which reported that the percentage of people who say they are unaffiliated with any particular faith has doubled in recent years. In the Congressmen's resolution -- which has 31 co-sponsors at this point -- the deep religious heritage of the United States of America is spelled out in the wonderful "Whereas" clauses which number almost 100... Washington, DC Council votes to recognize gay marriage
Just last week, gay marriages were held in Iowa by edict of that state's supreme court. A few days later the New Hampshire state Senate passed a gay marriage bill by one vote. And Vermont legalized gay marriage a few weeks ago. Now comes the District of Columbia.
And while we've watched as liberal judges demanded that marriage be redefined, and we've seen liberal politicians use slim majorities to change the definition of the oldest, most fundamental institution in the world, we haven't seen a demand for this radical transformation of marriage by the American people. Quite the opposite. In fact, in the over thirty states where the legal definition of marriage has been on the ballot in recent years, voters in each state have agreed that it should be exclusively defined as the union of one man and one woman... The Republicans' "Welfare Reform Restoration Act"
The Republicans in the House of Representatives' Republican Study Committee have introduced a bill to restore some of the great principles that were in the welfare reform bill passed by the Republican-controlled Congress during the 1990's and signed into law by President Bill Clinton, but which has been in the process of being gutted by the last two Democrat-controlled Congresses. It is called the "Welfare Reform Restoration Act", H.R. 1277.
Although the Republicans claim credit for passage of the welfare reform bill in the 1990's -- which was a major part of their "Contract with America" and enabled them to assume control of the House of Representatives after some 40 years -- Bill Clinton receives much of the credit for signing the welfare reform bill into law. The Republican/Clinton welfare reform bill led to a much-better-than-predicted result of a 65% reduction in welfare caseloads. Many who were on welfare are still in very productive jobs and are now leading well-fulfilled lives... (Read More)

Pro-abortion crowd pushing "UN Convention on Rights of the Child"
Backers of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, a United Nations treaty, are pushing Congress to ratify the document during the Obama administration. Although the treaty contains some language supporting unborn children, it has been used to push abortion on an international scale. The Convention on the Rights of the Child "recognizes that a child needs appropriate legal protection before, as well as after birth." At the same time it "doesn't recognize a child's right to be born", and has been used by UN committees, agencies and other non-governmental organizations to promote abortion. Meanwhile, liberal maintain the treaty won't "usurp our national sovereignty", but will "boost our credibility globally".
Pro-life opponents of the treaty in Congress are fighting back. Rep. Pete Hoekstra and pro-life Sen. Jim DeMint have filed a parental rights amendment that would defend against some of its provisions of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. "We better lay the groundwork," Hoekstra told AP... FOCA Coming "Sooner, rather than later" Democrat Says
"Sooner, rather than later." That's when a leading Democrat in Congress says they will introduce the radical pro-abortion "Freedom of Choice Act" - a bill which would overturn all current state and federal restrictions on abortion. No more waiting periods. No more parental consent. No more ban on partial-birth abortions.
When President Obama was campaigning for President, he let it be known in no uncertain terms what his position was on abortion. Within minutes of taking the Oath of Office, the official White House website was changed to add language supporting pro-abortion policies. Obama has appointed numerous liberals from pro-abortion organizations like Emily's List and the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) to critical positions in the government... (Read More)
