Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss has announced he is retiring from the U.S. Senate.

Speaking at the University of Georgia Chapel Monday, the Republican lawmaker said he has grown frustrated with Washington and what he calls the ugly political climate there.

Chambliss has devoted his time in the Senate to seeking solutions to America's debt crisis. But he said he has seen little success.

"I have worked very hard on the...number one issue facing our country, and we've made some progress, but we haven't gotten there. That was frustrating," Chambliss said.

Chambliss said he's not hopeful that we'll see debt solutions under the current political climate.

"I'd have to say the debacle we went through during July and August of 2011, with the Budget Control Act and the debt ceiling, that was an ugly process," he said.

"But the end of the year process on the fiscal cliff, that was really ugly, and it wasn't a lot of fun to go through," he added. "I can see that the next six months of this year is going to be the same sort of political arena."

Chambliss will be stepping down in two years when his term is up.
