The slippery slope of secular humanism continues to become even more so all around the world. We are quickly moving beyond a mere degradation of social virtues to outright hostility against religion and potential criminalization of adherents who practice their faith in their daily lives.

In recent years we have seen the Dutch government change its laws to allow euthanasia, gay marriage, infanticide of imperfect children, and most recently, the sanctioning of gay polygamous unions.

Gay marriage has become a reality in Canada and Massachusetts. For years our own governments have flirted with passage of so called "hate crimes" legislation that essentially criminalizes individual thoughts by way of adding extra penalties if biases, hatreds or intolerances are...

Religious rights in America took two steps forward and one step backward this week. In a very pleasant surprise yesterday, the United States Supreme Court unanimously allowed the city of Pleasant Grove City, Utah, to choose which donated monuments, including a Ten Commandments monument, belong in a city public park. The Supreme Court, in a 9-0 decision, ruled that the city could refuse to display Summum's Seven Aphorisms in its public park. This means that cities and state governments around America will no longer be forced with threats by the ACLU to include displays devoted to atheism just because the city or state government wants to display a Nativity scene. Most Americans will recall the anti-Christian bigotry which Democrat Governor Christine Gregoire displayed in...

Americans' religious rights and First Amendment rights continue to be eroded as evidenced by the jailing of a black pastor from a Berkeley, California church last week. He was the first person convicted -- two months ago -- under Oakland's law preventing pro-life protesters from coming within 8 feet of anyone entering an abortion clinic.

The Union City pastor, Walter Hoye, received a $1,000 fine, 30 days in jail (although in the future pro-lifers can be actually be put in jail for up to two years) and 3 years' probation. This courageous pastor told the judge: "I believe that an unjust law is no law at all." Pastor Hoye even answered Alameda Superior Court Judge Hing's question of whether or not he would abide by an order to stay 100 yards away from the Oakland abortion...

Some good news (and common sense) out of California this week.  A jury ruled that a group of firefighters rights were violated when they were forced to participate in a 2007 San Diego gay pride parade.

The firefighters were ordered to participate over their objections, and drive a city fire truck in the parade - being subjected to explicit advances and obscenities along the way.  A jury saw things their way, deciding that their rights had been violated.

A jury of eight women and four men deliberated for 2½ days and found that the firefighters,...

After finishing William J. Bennett's two volumn America, the last best hope, one is reminded of the ongoing attack against people of faith by atheists and other left-wingers inside and outside the government. Mr. Bennett relates in Volume II, From a World at War to the Triumph of Freedom, that the government bureaucrats in building the new World War II Memorial on the Washington Mall, left off Roosevelt's words "so help us God."

Franklin Roosevelt in his famous speech following the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor concluded his remarks before a joint session of Congress by saying: "With confidence in our armed forces -- with the unbounding determination of our people -- we will gain the inevitable triumph -- so help us God." Mr. Bennett said in a note below...

It was wonderful to hear that Pope Benedict XVI told Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who claims to be a devout Catholic, that Catholic elected officials have a special duty to protect human life "at all stages of its development." After the House passed the stimulus bill, the Speaker and a number of other Democrat officials flew to Rome and Paris. The Pope granted her and her husband a private 15 minute meeting in a small room off the Vatican auditorium after his weekly public audience.

The Speaker, in a press release, spun the meeting as one of all harmony and "great joy." However, the Vatican, which did not issue a photograph of the meeting so as to not allow her to use such a photo in public relation opportunities -- said that the Pope spoke of the church's teaching "on the...

Barack Obama and his congressional leaders did everything they could to persuade Americans that "time was of the essence" in passing the country's largest spending bill in American history. And they were actually able to twist enough arms -- the Republicans say deceive -- enough members of Congress to pass this bill and get it to the president's desk for his signature less than a month after Obama assumed office.

Yet, with all this haste and dire warnings about the urgency to get this bill passed, the bill sat on Obama's desk for 4 days after the Congress sent it to him. Just as bad, Obama actually took both Air Force One 747 jumbo jets to Denver to sign the bill in a key battleground state at a cost of $40,000 per hour per plane. Then after signing the...

Obama's Democrats' lust for power continues unabated. They control both chambers in the 111th Congress with a very large margin in the Senate. They control the White House. Yet, they want to give amnesty to 18 million plus illegal aliens and many of their family members not already in the United States. They believe that this action will provide many more Democrat votes in the future.

The Democrats want to muzzle conservative radio talk show hosts such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham. To do this, many key Democrats are threatening to bring back the so-called "Fairness Doctrine" through legislation which will effectively force all talk show hosts off the airwaves. They believe that this action will enable their friends in the left-wing media to...
