The leader of the Republicans in the United States Senate, Senator Mitch McConnell from Kentucky, is to be commended for doing what he can do stop the socialization of medicine in the United States of America. Today, he introduced the Kids First Act, which also has as its original co-sponsors: Senators Jim DeMint (S.C.), Robert Bennett (UT) and John Barrasso (WY.) Senator McConnell said on the Senate floor today that the Kids First Act -- an alternative to the hugely expensive Democrat bill, which is an expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) -- puts low income children first.
I was pleased to see the bipartisan op-ed in Friday's "The Washington Times" by the Democrat House Majority Leader, Steny Hoyer from Maryland, and by the Republican House Minority Whip, Eric Cantor from Virginia.
They begin their column by saying: "During this difficult war in the Gaza Strip, we stand with Israel. Why? Because we have been to Israel. We have seen Sderot. In August 2005 and again in 2007, we visited the region of southern Israel that includes this embattled Israeli border town. Taken together, the trips helped us define the historical and military context for Israel's current action in Gaza."
Recently, John R. Thomson, wrote about the voter fraud in Venezuela which he witnessed during a two week visit there while he spent time studying political, economic and social conditions. After reading Mr. Thomson's list of election fraud committed on behalf of President Hugo Chavez and his leftist coalition in Venezuela, it reminded me of some of the shenanigans commited on behalf of the uberliberal Al Franken, Democrat Senate candidate in Minnesota.
Many of us, who knew Paul Weyrich, founder of the Free Congress Foundation and Coalitions for America -- who also helped found the Heritage Foundation (and was the first president) and the Republican Study Committee in the United States House of Representatives -- have numerous cherished memories of him. Mr. Weyrich passed away today at the age of 66.
It is very rare that an American hero emerges from Hollywood -- filled with corrupt left-wingers and selfish megalomaniacs -- but one has emerged in the person of Gary Sinise. Most people know this wonderful actor as the Vietnam veteran who lost both his legs, Lieutenant Dan, during the war in the blockbuster movie, "Forest Gump," which won an Oscar for best film of the year in 1994. Others know him as one of the stars in "CSI, New York."
Raising a family in America is tough enough without having a major weekly news magazine denigrating the Christian values we are trying to instill in them. "Newsweek" magazine's latest cover story is just another example of how the mainstream news media is trying to corrupt the values of America's young.
"Newsweek" religion editor Lisa Miller, in her article, is trying to tell her readers that she knows better than what the authors of the Bible -- the inspired Word of God -- know when she writes that Jesus and the Bible never "explictly define [d] marriage as between one man and one woman."
Supporters of Christian Coalition of America, indeed, most Americans, are thankful for the life of Reverend George M. Docherty. He is the former pastor of the famous New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington D.C, a liberal on some issues, who gave a great sermon on February 7, 1954. One of the members of the audience during that sermon was President Dwight David Eisenhower.
What was in the sermon which has influenced history is the fact that Pastor Docherty urged that the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag be amended. He said: "To omit the words 'under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance is to omit the definitive factor in the American way of life." Some may argue that after the 2008 election.
As the old saying goes, "when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade".
Herewith, a list of some of the lemons from the recent election and the lemonade they could offer.
Election return lemons: the race is over. Obama won. The liberals have two out of three branches of government...with the third (the judiciary) hanging in the balance. Those are pretty big lemons.
Lemonade: conservatives have an opportunity to re-focus our message on our principles and define ourselves in stark relief to the inevitable liberal overreach...and then be positioned to catch those folks in the middle who will soon come down with a case of buyer's remorse.
"Be Thou present, O God of wisdom, and direct the councils of this honorable assembly." That was the very first prayer in the United States Congress on September 7, 1774. That is the verse which one reads when going to the home page of the new bipartisan Congressional Prayer Caucus founded by Virginia Republican Congressman Randy Forbes. He and his fellow members of this caucus are to be commended for emphasizing the importance of prayer in the history of America including in the United States Congress.
Knowledge, as they say, is power. Well, if you still lack enough information to decide which of the candidates for President will do the most damage to your values, prepare to be empowered.
Consider the following…
Unbridled liberalism: With Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid in charge of the White House, the House of Representatives and the Senate, Americans will be riding in the equivalent of a car with three gas pedals and no brake. Not a recipe for a safe ride. The only way to stop is to get into a crash.
