So much for Obama's campaign promise on abortion

A "Washington Post" reporter, E.J. Dionne on November 14, 2008, reminded Americans  --  right after Barack Obama was elected president  --  of one of Obama's "most important promises."  That "was to end the cultural and religious wars that have disfigured politics for four decades."  Obama's campaign promise was much like Bill Clinton's campaign promise in 1992 to keep abortion "safe, legal and rare."

E.J. Dionne goes on in his column:  "Obama added: 'Nobody's pro-abortion.'  Once he assumes office, Obama might be tempted to forget that moment, issue pro-choice executive orders that the abortion rights movement expects, and move back to the sagging economy."

Well, guess what?  Obama during his first day in office signed an executive order which will greatly increase abortions.  Yesterday, because of the Obama Democrat-controlled Congress, all federal abstinence funding ceased in America which of course will greatly increase abortions.

Last week, the Obama Democrats in the House Financial Services Appropriations Subcommittee in the United States House of Representatives approved their annual appropriations bill with language which will gut the longstanding ban on funding in the District of Columbia for abortions paid for by American taxpayers which former Congressman Robert Dornan introduced many years ago.

This new Obama policy will greatly increase abortions, paid for with hard-earned American tax dollars, in the nation's capital.  The entire House Appropriations Committee is expected to vote on the amendment gutting the Dornan Amendment on July 7th.  Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia, who is the Chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, recently wrote to members of the House Appropriations Committee urging them not to fund abortions in the District of Columbia.

Cardinal Rigali said that the House appropriations subcommittee's action "effectively nullifies the Dornan amendment" and he mentions in his statement that the Dornan Amendment "for a total of 18 years has prevented public funding of elective abortions in the District."   The cardinal said that this move is "presumably the first step in a broader effort to restore such funding throughout the federal government,"  and "is misguided for three reasons.

"First, public funding of abortion is rejected by the American people, as numerous surveys of public opinion have shown.

"Second, no lawmaker or Administration can support such a policy change and still claim to support 'reducing abortions.' The evidence is overwhelming, and universally recognized by groups on all sides of the abortion issue, that the availability of public funds for abortion greatly increases abortions.

"Third, this action takes place as Congress is working to win broad support for a much-needed major reform of our health care system.  This is the worst of all possible times to be injecting the divisive issue of public abortion funding into the debate on government health policy."

Barack Obama has clearly broken yet another of his campaign promises.  Americans need to immediately call their Member of the House of Representatives to stop this outrageous move by Barack Obama's minions in the House.  And it is way past time for the United States Congress and Barack Obama to pay attention to the will of the American people and to stop the abomination of public funding for abortions in this country.

Federal funding for issues in a small portion of the country seems "wrong in and of itself". Besides, how expensive is an abortion. I have heard it was between $200 - $1,000. That's not such a big hunk of cash. People regularly spend that in one weekend just having a good time.
