Sen DeMint Sponsors Amendment to Remove Faith Discrimination from Stimulus Bill
Senator Jim DeMint sponsors amendment to Obama "stimulus" bill, with co-sponsor Senator Sam Brownback, which deletes the prohibition of grant money from being spent on facilities that are used for "sectarian instruction, religious worship, or a school or department of divinity, or in which a substantial portion of the functions are subsumed in a religious mission" - DeMint Amend. Loses 43-54 Last Night - Democrats' goal is to put people of faith at yet another disadvantage
The president of the Christian Coalition of America, Roberta Combs, wrote this week in the Religious Rights Watch section of the CCA's website about a dangerous provision in the Democrat stimulus bill affecting people of faith. The provision states that the funds from the stimulus bill will not be able to be used to improve facilities that are "used for sectarian instruction, religious worship, or a school or department of divinity. The countless numbers of churches which use public school facilities will no longer be able to use such facilities if this abominable legislation passes. Senator Jim DeMint, R-SC, introduced an amendment to the stimulus bill to get rid of this onerous provision, which unfortunately was defeated last night by a margin of 43-54, with only 2 Republicans voting no to people of faith.
A spokesman in Senator DeMint's office said that the language in the Democrat stimulus bill is "regrettable" and could leave some institutions of higher learning susceptible to a legal action by organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
In the Democrats' stimulus bill, $20 billion is included for infrastructure improvements, including $6 billion to collegesand universities which will have to abide by the anti-faith provisions in the bill. It is beyond belief that a large number of Democrat members of Congress are absolutely intent on satisfying the anti-Christian whims of their left-wing supporters and passing legislation putting Christians and other people of faith at an exterme disadvantage in America.
People of faith need to call both of their Senators immediately (202-224-3121) to urge them to vote AGAINST the stimulus bill with the anti-faith provisions in the $20 billion infrastructure improvement section of the stimulus bill. They also need to call the White House (202-456-1414) to insist that this discriminatory provision be removed immediately. Time is of the essence.
