"Truthers" and "Birthers" and now "Deathers"
Regarding the great U.S. Navy Seals' killing of Osama Bin Laden yesterday in Pakistan, emails are bouncing around the Internet this morning and the sentiments are like this: "Thinking people are asking why the authorities think it was wise to bury Osama's body at sea?" and "There will always be those who question whether or not it was his body" and this most important statement of all: "I don't think we have any reason to trust that leaders of nations are not above conspiracy and deception for political reasons."
A father of a 9/11 victim reacting to the death of Osama Bin Laden on Fox News said this morning, "I wanted to see the body of Osama Bin Laden" and he said "I want to have closure." This anguished father did not know why they buried Osama at sea and he had other such questions.
Interestingly enough, "The Washington Times" had a lead editorial entitled "Obama's approval freefall," probably published only hours before the newspaper got the news that Obama was killed. The editorial reported that the Gallup weekly survey showed that Obama's support had dropped across the board since the middle of March, even amongst his most die-hard 2008 supporters.
"Most surprisingly, and perhaps alarming for the White House, are the disproportionate approval drops in key support groups. Approval from those aged 18-20 declined at twice the rate of the general population. Support in eastern United States, an Obama bastion, dropped at a similar rate, as did support from nonwhites."
It took the president over 2 years to produce his birth certificate for an increasingly skeptical American public concerned about his lack of transparency throughout his presidency. Like the "truthers" who believed that President George W. Bush was largely responsible for the Islamic terrorist attack upon America, and the "birthers" who believe that Barack Obama was not born in America, we undoubtedly will have a new category of doubters called the "deathers."
Was that really Osama's body that was thrown over the side of the ship on the high seas? Where is the proof that it was his body? The DNA "evidence" could be rigged? The wife's confession that it was him could have been forced. Is Osama still in a cave somewhere? The "deathers" will say that Obama's Chicago political operatives had seen the precipitous drop in approval ratings amongst his core groups and they urged Obama to "do something."
Had Obama not taken Osama out, that would have been a major broken campaign promise, so it is a good thing he made the decision to do so. It is too bad that the president has brought on all this cynicism and skepticism upon himself because of the manipulations by his administration to pass his legislation, because Obama's bypassing Congress when he doesn't get his way, and because of frequent non-transparent actions during his presidency.
Ironically, it was reported that Obama broke another campaign promise by using "enhanced interrogation" to get intelligence before the raid on Pakistan. Perhaps, he will now begin to fulfill another campaign promise: to be the most transparent president in American history.
