Maine Same Sex Marriage Law

A couple of weeks ago I stood in line with many others for hours (literally - 7) to be able to speak my voice in opposition to LD 1020 that would grant the homosexual community the privilege of using the term marriage to describe their union. I was amazed at the sea of red shirts worn by those in favor of the bill. Clearly our side had not received any such memo. We were outflanked in organization(one woman on our side even quipped - "organized? us - organized?") and outmaneuvered in presence (apparently they bussed in support from out of state who were also wearing the red shirts - obviously increasing their appearance of having a popular majority). We did hold the majority of offensive retoric on our side, however, not something that helped us at all. We had some wonderful, respectful, intellegent arguments placed by many of the dedicated people who stood in our line, but their plans worked and the bill passed and today was signed into law.

We live in a society of "someone else will do it" thinking and this time someone else did it - though not the way we wanted. It is time for those who are for traditional marriage, for children's rights, and for maintaining ideals in our society to come forward and take a stand. It is possible that society at large is truly in favor of passing this bill and that we are now the minority. I feel we cannot accept that as reality unless we have done all we can to make sure signatures of any and all who feel as I do have had the chance to unite and make that voice heard in the halls of the state. To do otherwise would be to turn a blind eye to moral corruption, thereby encouraging it.
