Be of Good Cheer, Pro-lifers!
Everyone in the pro-family and pro-life movements know by now the landmark victories for traditional values in the November 4th election including the three constitutional marriage amendments passed in California, Florida and Arizona making it a total of 30 states which have amendments to their constitutions upholding traditional marriage between one man and one woman.
However, with all the very depressing news about the White House being taken over by a committed left-wing abortion supporter, and some pro-abortion consolidation in the United States Congress, there is some very good news regarding just who was elected to the new 111th Congress.
One of the most exciting was the election of an Iraq war veteran, Congressman-elect Duncan Hunter Jr, (52nd District,) son of the great former Armed Services Committee Chairman, Duncan Hunter Sr., and it is anticipated that a great pro-lifer, Tom McClintock, will be also elected in the 4th District after a recount.
Other important pro-family victories include the reelection of pro-lifers in the Senate, including that of the Senate Ranking Republican, Mitch McConnell (Kentucky) who will be able to organize effective filibusters to stop anti-family and left-wing legislation. Most of the other pro-life Senators up for reelection won their seats, but the pro-life movement probably suffered a 5 pro-life seat loss overall.
In the House of Representatives -- even though losing pro-life stalwarts such as Marilyn Musgrave (Colorado,) targeted by the powerful homosexual movement for 5 years because she authored the Federal Marriage Amendment; and Tom Feeney (Florida,) and Steve Chabot (Ohio) -- the pro-life and pro-family movement saw many of their pro-life/pro-family champions returned to the House.
Additionally, last Tuesday's results saw the the election of new pro-life Republican Members of the House such as Mike Coffman in Colorado (6th Dist.); Bill Posey in Florida (15th Dist.); Tom Rooney in Florida (16th Dist.); Aaron Schock in Illinois (18th Dist.); Brett Guthrie in Kentucky (2nd Dist.); Dr. Bill Cassidy, M.D. in Louisiana; Erik Paulson in Minnesota (3rd Dist.); Gregg Harper in Mississippi (3rd Dist.), Lane Luetkemeyer in Missouri (9th Dist.); Steve Austria in Ohio (7th Dist.); Glenn Thompson in Pennsylvania (5th Dist.); Dr. Phil Roe, M.D. in Tennesse; Jason Chaffetz in Utah (3rd Dist.); Pete Olson in Texas (22nd Dist.); Cynthia Lummis in Wyoming (At large); and a conservative in the Louisiana 4th District (run-off in December between two conservatives; either Republican John Fleming or Democrat Paul Carmouche.)
A pro-life woman Democrat was actually elected in Pennsylvania: Kathy Dahlkemper and a pro-life Democrat physician, Parker Griffith, was elected in Alabama (5th Dist.) Other pro-life Democrats elected include: Bobby Bright from Alabama (2nd Dist.); and Steve Driehaus from Ohio (1st Dist.)
So the news for the pro-life and pro-family movements was not all bad last week. Indeed, the 2010 election is just around the corner. We all remember what happened just 2 years after Bill Clinton's big victory in 1992 along with his big gains in a Democrat-controlled Congress. Clinton saw an overwhelming rejection by the American people for his policies in the 1994 election and a Republican tsunami resulted with the Republicans taking over both the Senate and House of Representatives and keeping controll of Congress for 12 years.
